Sheffield United have completed the signing of former Manchester United defender Alyssa Aherne on a free transfer.

WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Blades this evening.

The 21-year-old joins Sheffield United after leaving former club Manchester United earlier this summer. Aherne came through the Manchester United academy system before pushing for first team honours.

The defender is no stranger to Sheffield United fans. She enjoyed a loan spell at Bramall Lane last season. Aherne made eight appearances for The Blades in all competitions.

The youngster has also previously turned out for Everton during a brief loan spell on Merseyside, although minutes were limited.

After adding Aherne to his squad on a permanent basis, Sheffield United boss Ash Thompson said “We saw what Alyssa can do towards the end of last season and I’m really excited to both bring her back as a permanent Sheffield United player and also see how she develops with us because we know how much talent Alyssa has. I’m looking forward to working with her again because we know she has the attributes to be an important player for us moving forwards.”

Further Sheffield United squad news will be announced in due course.
