49ers WR Demarcus Robinson suspended 3 games for violating NFL’s substance abuse policy

The NFL has suspended San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Demarcus Robinson for three games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, coach Kyle Shanahan said on KNBR radio Wednesday. The suspension comes a month after Robinson pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor DUI charge stemming from an arrest last November.

Shanahan said Robinson could appeal the suspension but that the team is planning for a three-game absence.

Robinson was with the Los Angeles Rams when he was arrested on Nov. 25 on suspicion of a DUI after a game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Patrol officers said his vehicle was traveling over 100 mph and that they observed “objective signs and symptoms of alcohol impairment.” Robinson was cited and then released to a “responsible party,” but the Rams did not suspend the receiver.

The 30-year-old was charged with a misdemeanor DUI on Jan. 10.

In addition to Robinson’s suspension, the 49ers will likely be without receiver Brandon Aiyuk for the first few games of the regular season as he recovers from a torn ACL suffered in 2024. Meanwhile, Jauan Jennings has missed time during training camp with a calf injury, and rookie Jordan Watkins’ status for Week 1 is in doubt because of a high ankle sprain. San Francisco general manager John Lynch noted at the NFL owners’ meetings this spring that he was aware Robinson could be suspended for the first three games.

“There’s an opportunity that he may miss some time,” Lynch said.

Robinson signed a two-year deal with San Francisco in March after spending the last two seasons in Los Angeles.
