    Yankees’ ‘Hamilton’ hat marks team’s first Broadway-inspired stadium giveaway

    The New York Yankees weren’t going to throw away their shot to create a “Hamilton” cap to celebrate the Broadway hit’s 10th anniversary. 

    Last month the team announced it would recognize a decade of Lin Manuel Miranda’s award-winning, hip hop-infused onstage American history lesson by giving away a co-branded Yankees/Hamilton cap at its Aug. 25 game against the Washington Nationals (of course, given that night’s theme).

    Two of the most recognizable brands in New York adorn the “midnight navy blue” adjustable cap which features a “Hamilton”-inspired gold interlocking “NY” Yankees logo on the front and the Broadway play’s gold star logo topped by a silhouette of Miranda’s Alexander Hamilton pointing to the sky on the side.

    The hats will be handed out to the first 10,000 fans that arrive at the Yankees-Nationals game.

    Debbie Tymon, the Yankees’ SVP of marketing, says talks between the team and “Hamilton” had been ongoing for quite some time leading up to the announcement of the caps.

    “The Hamilton folks reached out at least almost a year ago and we started discussions on what the opportunities could be,” Tymon said. “They were sort of long-range planning for their 10th anniversary.”

    After agreeing to the collaboration Tymon began coordinating on-field moments for the game with the “Hamilton” team. The game’s ceremonial first pitch will be thrown by original cast member Renée Elise Goldsberry. The national anthem will be performed by another original cast member, Christopher Jackson. A live performance of “God Bless America” will be sung by the actors currently portraying the Schyuler sisters — Stephanie Umoh, Morgan Anita Wood and Cherry Torres — during the seventh inning stretch. Even the grounds crew at the game will be in on the act, dressed in “Hamilton” T-shirts for the night.

    When it came time to design the cap for the giveaway, the “Hamilton” team originally suggested a yellow/gold cap with Yankees and “Hamilton” logos to align with the trademark colors most synonymous with the show. Tymon countered with a suggestion of a midnight navy blue Yankees cap with a golden interlocking “NY” and “Hamilton” logo.

    “It was very much a collaborative effort to create the right brand,” Tymon said.

    Tymon is aware that Yankees game giveaways have been known to cause a “frenzy” at the gates (the “Seinfeld”/George Costanza desk bobble head day on August 21 will likely be one of those days), noting that some fans show up as early as 2 p.m. for a 7 p.m. first pitch to line up and wait for the stadium to open to receive promotional items.

    For the dedicated Yankees fan who loves “Hamilton,” but may not be fond of waiting outside for hours during the dog days of summer, the team has provided another way to secure the Yankees/Hamilton cap. The Yankees have set aside 500 special event tickets for the game that can be purchased online. Ten dollars from every special event ticket sold will be donated to the Beyond the Stage Door nonprofit organization.

    “This ensures someone, you don’t have to come, you don’t have to stand for three hours in the sun,” Tymon said. “If you purchase through this package you can just redeem your ticket and receive your hat.”

    The hat has already proven popular on the secondary market, with pre-sales on eBay going for between $65-$125 so far, significantly more than the $45 the team charges for a traditional fitted Yankees hat like the players wear on the field.

    While the Yankees have always done Broadway themed nights at Yankee Stadium according to Tymon, the “Hamilton” cap is the team’s first ever Broadway-inspired promotional giveaway and the perfect merging of two fandoms bound to intersect with each other.

    “You look at our New York City fan base in and of itself and there is the crossover with Broadway,” Tymon said. “And then again, this is that unique item that no one has ever done.”
