Manchester United Face Questions Over Keeper’s Future

Onana’s Future at Manchester United Faces Fresh Questions

Manchester United’s summer of change has brought both excitement and uncertainty. Ruben Amorim’s decision to bench Andre Onana for the opening two Premier League fixtures has fuelled speculation about the goalkeeper’s long-term future.

Onana was absent from the squad entirely in the first game and replaced by Altay Bayindir in the next. This raised eyebrows among fans and pundits alike. Former club Inter Milan are reportedly monitoring the situation closely and, according to Caught Offside, see Onana as a “serious candidate” to return to the San Siro.

Inter Milan Interest and United’s Goalkeeping Dilemma

Inter are not alone in their interest. Other European and Middle Eastern clubs are said to be “circling” the Cameroon international. United’s hierarchy, while insisting that Onana is not in immediate danger, would consider offers of around £30 million, as per the report.

Graeme Bailey moved to calm fears, stating:“Andre Onana’s immediate future is not called into question with the impending arrival of Senne Lammens. Should a number one have come in, then Onana would have been loaned – as we have revealed – but now the same can’t be said of number two Altay Bayindir.”

Bayindir’s Uncertain Future and Lammens’ Arrival

While Bayindir started the opening game, his future appears far from secure. Bailey added:“Bayindir may have started the first game but his future is far from certain now – Lammens has been told he is coming in to challenge Onana. I am told that intermediaries are now actively working hard on finding Bayindir that new club. It could be a loan at this point but work is being done.”

Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens is expected to join United soon, with a reported £22 million fee after personal terms were agreed. Antwerp had initially asked for £17 million, but negotiations have driven the price higher.

    Amorim’s Selection Policy Sparks Debate

Amorim defended his choices before the 1-1 draw with Fulham, saying:“It’s the kind of decision that the manager has to make, try to see the game, try to imagine the next game and try to put the best players to win the game, so I did that.”

United fans may wonder whether this is tactical rotation or the start of a major shift in the club’s goalkeeping hierarchy.

Away from the goalkeeping drama, reports suggest United are accelerating the sale of Antony. Real Betis, who took the winger on loan last season, are “advancing in talks” with an improved offer expected soon.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

This situation leaves Manchester United supporters in a state of unease. Onana’s exclusion in favour of Bayindir, only for the Turkish goalkeeper’s own future to look fragile, points to instability at the back. Fans expected solidity, not uncertainty, especially after the significant outlay on Onana just last year.

The potential signing of Senne Lammens could be seen as sensible squad depth or a clear message to Onana that standards must rise. At £22 million, it is hardly a stop-gap move. Supporters might reasonably ask why the club is investing heavily again so soon.

The Inter Milan links will worry many. Losing Onana after one turbulent season could be a public admission of failure in recruitment strategy. Meanwhile, the Antony sale being pushed forward feels like a broader rebuild in progress. Some fans are excited at the ambition shown under Amorim, others fear the lack of stability and cohesion.

If United do end up with four senior goalkeepers, it signals indecision at board level, which has often been their Achilles heel in recent years. For now, all eyes will be on Amorim’s next team sheet.
