Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are taking their relationship to new heights.
Swift announced the couple’s engagement via Instagram on Tuesday afternoon, and the post accrued over 1 million likes in nine minutes. Swift posted a five-picture slideshow of the proposal, including a photo of the diamond ring.
Kelce hosted his now fiancée on an episode of his “New Heights” podcast with his brother, Jason, on Aug. 13 in one of the most highly anticipated sports and pop culture crossovers of the year. According to Guinness World Records, the episode broke the record for most concurrent views for a podcast on YouTube with 1.3 million.
With Kelce a star tight end for a Kansas City Chiefs team that has won three Super Bowls in six years, and Swift one of the most famous pop stars of the 21st century known for emotional love songs, breakup songs and everything in between, much of their two-year courtship has played out in the public eye.
The two began dating when Kelce attended Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour in Kansas City in July 2023. Kelce later said on his podcast that he had tried and failed to give Swift a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it — a play on Swift fan culture in which concertgoers exchange friendship bracelets with lyrics. But then Swift began attending Chiefs games, the couple was increasingly seen on dates in public and Kelce began attending the Eras Tour.
Cue endless viral posts featuring Swift at games, including what she wore, what she ate and what she said (and, bizarrely, an evening of Empire State Building lighting paying homage to Swift’s gameday condiments, ketchup and “seemingly ranch”). Cue every Swift/football pun possible. Cue Swift fans teaching each other about football and speculating that Swift could grow the NFL’s female audience.
Cue a 2024 Super Bowl win for Kelce and a celebratory on-field photo-op. Cue discourse about whether or not networks are spending too much time showing Swift at the games on TV. Cue discourse about the discourse about the discourse.
And now, cue a wedding.
How this impacts the Chiefs
Really, not much. Taylor Swift had already been a staple in Chiefs’ game luxury suites during the season, and the attention has already been at an all-time high in K.C., thanks to her presence along with the team’s success as it has advanced to three consecutive Super Bowls.
Tuesday’s announcement ensures that this sort of hoopla at Chiefs games will become the status quo rather than the early novelty it was starting in the 2023 season. The Chiefs should continue to set up their relied-upon security processes for Swift’s home-game appearances, and fans across the NFL will surely be seeing more of her during broadcasts as she continues to support her fiancé during this 2025 campaign. — Jesse Newell, Chiefs beat writer
