Some games are more difficult than others to handicap in Week 2. The Boston College Eagles’ trip to face the Michigan State Spartans is one such game.

Any power rankings remembering 2024 favor the Eagles, yet the Spartans are 3.5-point home favorites.

My Boston College vs. Michigan State predictions see two lackluster rosters and will thus trust the home favorite with the better quarterback.

Here are my college football picks for Saturday, September 6.

Boston College vs Michigan State predictions

Here are our early thoughts on the spread and total for this week’s game. We will have a full game preview (with a best bet and SGP) later in the week.

Early Boston College vs Michigan State spread pick: Michigan State -3.5 (-105)

This early lean article exists solely because NBC signed less of a deal with the Big Ten than it realized at the time, resigning itself to primetime showcases of teams that may define the concept of “mediocre.”

If anything, “mediocre” may be a compliment to both Boston College and Michigan State.

The Spartans at least return a few notable defensive linemen in Jalen Thompson and Alex Vansumeren.

That is the nicest thing that can be said about any of the four lines in this matchup, and when you combine that with Michigan State also having the quarterback edge courtesy of Aidan Chiles compared to Dylan Lonergan, then betting on the short home favorite holds plenty of logic.

Early Boston College vs Michigan State total pick: Under 45.5 (-106)

When neither offensive line can be trusted to be competent and cohesive, take the Under. This is not complicated.

It was a revelatory trend in Week 1, Unders cashing 63.5% of the time in no small part because offensive line play has fallen off as players have run out of extended eligibility.

The edge should go to both of these defensive lines.

Boston College vs Michigan State odds

    • Boston College vs. Michigan State spread: Michigan State -3.5
    • Boston College vs. Michigan State moneyline: Boston College +138, Michigan State -164
    • Boston College vs. Michigan State Over/Under: 45.5

    Douglas Farmer

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
