Wednesday’s Starting Pitcher Rankings
George Kirby (SP – SEA) at TB
George Kirby is arguably in the best form of tonight’s probable starting pitchers. Among tonight’s probable starters, Kirby’s 3.62 xFIP is the lowest and his 3.87 SIERA is the third lowest, per FanGraphs. During that five-start stretch spanning 30.2 innings, Kirby also had a 3.52 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 6.2 BB%, 22.5 K%, 11.6 SwStr%, 28.7 CSW%, 95 stuff+, 116 location+ and 111 pitching+. Kirby also has two wins and four quality starts in his previous five starts. He has an OK matchup and decent betting info tonight.
The Rays are tied for 10th in wRC+ (105) with a 22.3 K% versus righties and tied for ninth in wRC+ (107) with a 22.2 K% at home in 2025. However, Tampa Bay was tied for 20th in wRC+ (93) with a 25.2 K% in the previous 30 days. Thus, the Mariners are listed as -146 favorites, and the game’s total is a non-threatening 8.0 runs.
Ryan Bergert (SP – KC) at LAA
Ryan Bergert has pitched well for the Royals, albeit with the aid of good luck. Still, Bergert’s underlying data has improved since the Royals acquired him from the Padres. In five starts spanning 28.1 innings for Kansas City, Bergert has had the following stats.
- 2.54 ERA
- 4.27 xFIP
- 4.23 SIERA
- 1.02 WHIP
- One win
- One quality start
- 7.1 BB%
- 22.1 K%
- 10.7 SwStr%
- 28.9 CSW%
- 81 stuff+
- 125 location+
- 109 pitching+
Bergert has a cushy matchup tonight.
The Angels are 25th in wRC+ (94) with a 26.2 K% versus righties and tied for 13th in wRC+ (97) with a 26.1 K% on the road this season. They were also 25th in wRC+ (89) with a 28.5 K% in the previous 30 days. Bergert’s salary is too low at DraftKings, making him an ideal SP2 in all game types. He’s less appealing at FanDuel because he hasn’t earned many quality starts.
Cade Horton (SP – CHC) vs. ATL
Cade Horton might have a stronger case for pitching the best in the previous 30 days of tonight’s probable starters than Kirby. Horton has a slate-best 1.44 ERA, the lowest SIERA (3.41), the fourth-lowest xFIP (3.81), the lowest WHIP (0.88) and the highest strikeout rate (28.3 K%) among tonight’s probable starters in the previous 30 days. Horton also tallied three wins and three quality starts in those five starts. Horton has a decent matchup and tasty betting info tonight.
The Braves are tied for 17th in wRC+ (101) with a 22.5 K% versus righties and tied for 13th in wRC+ (97) with a 22.3 K% on the road this season. Atlanta was also tied for 14th in wRC+ (106) with a 22.0 K% in the previous 30 days. Finally, the Cubs are -178 favorites, and the game’s total is 8.5 runs.
Suggested Lineup Stacks
German Marquez has a 6.36 ERA, 5.26 xFIP and 1.69 WHIP in 46.2 innings at home since last year. He hasn’t effectively navigated his launching pad home ballpark, to say the least. Moreover, Marquez has a 6.14 ERA, 5.51 xERA, 5.05 xFIP, 5.04 SIERA and 1.69 WHIP in 21 starts this year. He’s yielded a .396 wOBA to 216 left-handed batters and a .369 wOBA to 217 right-handed batters this season.
- Home (Wrigley Field)
- Game Total/Moneyline: 8.5 Runs/CHC -178
Bryce Elder is a punching bag, and he’s in dreadful form. The righty has a 5.28 ERA, 4.23 xFIP, 4.45 SIERA and 1.21 WHIP in his previous five starts. Elder’s ERA estimators might lead some readers to believe he’s been quite unlucky, but Elder has a 4.69 ERA, 4.30 xFIP and 4.55 SIERA in his career, and he has a 5.85 ERA and 4.97 xERA in 23 starts this season. Chalking up the gap between Elder’s ERA and ERA estimators would be ill-advised. Finally, Elder has surrendered a .329 wOBA to 268 lefties and a .365 wOBA to 285 righties this year.
Core Studs
- Rafael Devers is on a heater. In his previous 117 plate appearances, Devers has hit 10 homers with 21 runs, 19 RBIs, .393 OBP, .333 ISO, .426 wOBA and 180 wRC+.
- Willy Adames has launched nine long-balls with 19 runs, 16 RBIs, four stolen bases, a .324 OBP, .287 ISO, .354 wOBA and 130 wRC+.
- Matt Chapman has smashed 15 homers with a .343 OBP, .215 ISO, .344 wOBA and 123 wRC+ in 341 plate appearances against righties this season.
Value Plays/Punts
- Ian Happ has recorded a .360 OBP, .196 ISO, .351 wOBA and 126 wRC+ against righties since 2023.
- Rookie Drew Gilbert has mashed two taters with a .313 OBP, .313 ISO, .393 wOBA and 157 wRC+ in 32 plate appearances against righties this season.
- Carter Jensen isn’t a lock to start tonight, but he’s an enticing minimum-salaried punt at catcher on DraftKings if he starts. The left-handed-hitting catching prospect hit 20 homers with 72 runs, 76 RBIs, 10 stolen bases, .377 OBP, .211 ISO, .393 wOBA and 163 wRC+ in 492 plate appearances (308 in Double-A and 184 in Triple-A) in the minors this season.
