The Week 2 early afternoon slate is loaded with nine games, including Ben Johnson’s first trip back to Detroit as Chicago’s head coach. The Lions have dominated this series recently, winning five of the last six meetings. Both teams enter this week hoping to avoid falling to 0-2 and occupying the NFC North cellar. The other early afternoon games feature Jacksonville at Cincinnati, New England at Miami, San Francisco at New Orleans, LA [Rams] at Tennessee, Buffalo at New York [Jets], Seattle at Pittsburgh, New York [Giants] at Dallas, and Cleveland at Baltimore.

Chicago let one slip away in Johnson’s head coaching debut. They relinquished a 17-6 lead in the fourth quarter, giving up three touchdowns to J.J. McCarthy in his NFL debut, all in the final quarter. Caleb Williams had a decent showing in his first game under Johnson, completing 21 of 35 passes for 210 yards and a TD. Moving forward, the Bears will need to close out games and avoid allowing teams to hang around like the Vikings did last Monday night.

Lions coach Dan Campbell walked into the 2025 season already worried about his team. Last week’s performance against Green Bay did very little to reassure Campbell. Detroit lacked that same explosiveness showcased under Ben Johnson, and the defense was lackluster. Jared Goff passed the ball 39 times and the Lions came away with a 27-13 loss. The Lions had the sixth-best rushing attack in the NFL last season and gained just 46 yards in Week 1. They’ll need to get the running game back on track to avoid a second straight loss to start the season.

Among key inactives ahead of the day are 49ers starting quarterback Brock Purdy, who is dealing with a case of turf toe; the Niners will also be without star tight end George Kittle, who landed on injured reserve after suffering a hamstring injury in Week 1. Several key defenders will be missing for their respective teams this week, too, including two starting defensive backs for the Steelers, including Joey Porter Jr. and DeShon Elliott, who join 2025 first-round pick Derrick Harmon on the sidelines today, as well as Bills DT Ed Oliver, who’s dealing with a foot injury.
