Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw a late fourth quarter interception in his team’s 31-21 road loss to the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, halting a potential game-tying drive with his team down a touchdown at the time.
Losing 28-21, Miami faced a first-and-10 from the Buffalo 21-yard line with 3:06 left in regulation. Tagovailoa dropped back to pass and had his eyes set on wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. However, linebacker Terrel Bernard stepped in front of the pass and picked it off, returning the ball to the Buffalo 41-yard line.
The Bills went down the field and eventually sealed the win after Matt Prater kicked a 48-yard field goal with 22 seconds remaining.
Last Sunday, Tagovailoa threw a fourth-quarter interception en route to a 33-27 home loss to the New England Patriots.
Down 30-27, the Dolphins faced a 4th-and-9 from their own 48-yard line with 2:22 remaining in regulation. Tagovailoa potentially could have hit an open Julian Hill but instead targeted Malik Washington. The result was a Marte Mapu interception.
This has been a nightmarish start to the season for Tagovailoa and the 0-3 Dolphins, who began the year with a disastrous 33-8 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Miami has looked much better since, but that hasn’t resulted in wins.
Tagovailoa has endured a rough beginning as well, throwing four interceptions over three games. On Thursday, Tagovailoa threw for just 146 yards on 34 attempts (4.3 yards per attempt).
His play in 2025 is far off from what he’s shown in the recent past, when he led the league in yards per attempt in 2022 and passing yards in 2023.
