SERGIO RAMOS cost his latest club after an embarrassing Panenka attempt backfired for Monterrey.

The four-time Champions League winner was attempting to score his seventh goal from defence since joining the Mexican outfit in February, but was left with egg on his face instead.

Ramos’ 20th-minute penalty was saved easily by Toluca goalkeeper Hugo Gonzalez, who did not fall for the dinked effort.

Instead, Gonzalez stood tall, caught the ball and set his team on a counter attack which came close to an equaliser.

Toluca went up the other end after Gonzalez’s quick roll out, working a cross and almost scoring to make the game 1-1, with a clearance off the line needed.

Monterrey keeper Santiago Mele was then forced to make a good stop his own, diving low to his right to save an effort from the edge of the box.

Ramos, recovering to get back and help his team defend, was full of congratulations for Mele after being let off for his penalty blunder.

Despite being 1-0 up with a chance to go two ahead, this was as good as it got for the former Real Madrid man.

Monterrey were heavily beaten 6-2 on the night and found themselves 2-1 behind just five minutes after looking set to get a 2-0 lead.

They did get the game back to 3-2 prior to half time but conceded another two goals after the break in a heavy defeat to one of their early season rivals.

Toluca ended the night in second place behind only Cruz Azul with the top five in Mexico separated by just five points after 10 matches.

Writing on Reddit, one user enjoyed seeing Ramos mess up.

They said: “I find it incredibly satisfying whenever I see a Panenka saved.”

One reply added sarcastically: “Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.”
