October is here, and the 2025 MLB playoffs are underway. The Dodgers completed a two-game sweep of the Reds in the Wild Card Series on Wednesday and advanced to the NLDS to face the Phillies. The other three best-of-three Wild Card Series all feature elimination games on Thursday. In the first one, the Tigers used a huge seventh inning to oust the Guardians and avenge their loss in the AL Central. The Cubs followed that up by holding off the Padres and eliminating San Diego at Wrigley Field. Yankees vs. Red Sox is rounding out the night.
Game 3s are rare in the Wild Card Series. The current format was introduced in 2022, and out of the 12 series in the first three years of its existence, only two of them went to a decisive Game 3. The Padres and Yankees will try to buck another trend. Under the best-of-three Wild Card Series format, Game 1 winners are now 15-0 all time in the series after the Tigers’ and Cubs’ victories on Thursday.
The League Division Series round kicks off Saturday. The Tigers are heading to Seattle to face the second-seeded Mariners. The Blue Jays will face the Yankees-Red Sox winner, and the Brewers will host either the Cubs or Padres.
