Heading into his third NBA season, San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has been putting in work to add more muscle and bulk to his body.
Appearing on Kevin Hart’s Cold As Balls show on LOL Network’s YouTube channel (starts at 2:10 mark), Wembanyama said he has added “probably like 30 pounds” since being drafted with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft.
You would be hard-pressed to find anyone who had any negative things to say about Wembanyama leading up to the draft, but the one potential concern area was how his frame would hold up against NBA competition.
B/R’s Jonathan Wasserman wrote in August 2022 that Wembanyama’s strength and durability were a potential weak point and his NBA team would “surely consult with numerous doctors about his body and biomechanics.”
The subject of Wembanyama’s weight was something that he was also aware of, though not a topic he particularly enjoyed hearing about.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Jonathan Givony noted in February 2023 that putting on weight was a “sensitive topic with Wembanyama and his advisers.”
Wembanyama did not take part in the NBA scouting combine in May 2023 because the Metropolitans 92’s season was still ongoing, so there was no official height and weight measurement taken. He was listed at 237 pounds on the NBA’s 2023 draft profile website.
The official NBA website currently has Wembanyama listed at 235 pounds. All of this is to show that no one outside of his camp and the Spurs organization have any idea what his actual weight is right now. It’s certainly plausible he could be in the range of 265-270 pounds.
Regardless, though, none the pre-draft concerns about Wembanyama’s weight have come into play in the NBA. The 21-year-old has averaged a double-double and led the league in total blocks and blocks per game in each of his first two seasons.
After his sophomore season was cut short due to a blood clot, Wembanyama was fully cleared for basketball activities in July. He is on track to be on floor when the Spurs tipoff the 2025-26 campaign against the Dallas Mavericks on Oct. 22.
