Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy is known for keeping things loose during his meetings with the media.
He demonstrated that Saturday when he asked reporters he didn’t know, many of whom were part of the Japanese media contingent, to introduce themselves before he fielded questions about his team.
It has become a part of how Murphy runs his news conferences. Why does he take time for the introductions with the visitors who show up to cover his team?
“It keeps the room happy,” he said.
On Wednesday, it was Murphy’s 10-year-old son, Austin, who provided a light-hearted moment.
With this dad sitting beside him at a news conference on the Brewers’ off day from their NLCS series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Austin was asked by a reporter, “Based on your knowledge of the Brewers, what do they need to do to get out of the 2-0 deficit they’re facing?”
“Just stick with it and keep battling through it,” Austin said without hesitation. “I think they can do it. Yeah, I believe they can do it.”
Added the reporter: “What makes you believe?”
“Well, the guys respond back really good. The start of the season: 0-4; those games were not good. But they responded with the best record in baseball, so I believe they can do it.”
Pat Murphy’s 10 year old son Austin was asked a question in today’s presser about why the Brewers can erase a 2-0 deficit.
“The guys respond back really good,” he said.

His dad nodded in agreement after Austin finished talking. Pat Murphy keeps his kids close, as they’ve appeared in postgame news conferences before the playoffs, sitting with their dad.
In addition to his young sons, Austin and 6-year-old son Jaxon, Murphy has two grown children, daughter Keli and son Kai. He also has two granddaughters from Keli, who is married to former Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez.
“My whole life is my kids and my job, and it’s always been that way,” he told USA Today’s Bob Nightengale recently.
