Washington Wizards guard Tre Johnson stepped to the free-throw line with his team trailing 50-39 in the second quarter of Friday’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers in Washington, D.C.
The rookie drained the first shot, but the scoreboard didn’t budge. And no one seemed to notice. Neither Johnson nor the Wizards got credit for that point in a contest that ended Friday night with a final score of 148-114 in favor of Cleveland.
On Saturday morning, the NBA released a statement acknowledging the error and updated the score to 148-115.
“With 8:15 remaining in the second quarter, Tre Johnson’s (WAS) first free throw attempt was incorrectly entered as a missed free throw, when in fact he made both,” the statement read. “… The game statistics have been corrected.”

After the correction, Johnson’s stat line for the game has been updated. He finished with 19 points and made 2 of 3 free throws.
Tim Frank, senior vice president of communication for league operations, said the mistake was “just a case of human error” in a text message to The Athletic.
“(It’s) not something that happens a lot, but clearly a miss that needed to be corrected,” Frank added. “The in-arena statistician first missed the play. We then have stats auditors who make corrections in real time, but (they) also do a full game review after the fact and this mistake was caught there.”
The recovered point would not have made much of a difference in Washington’s 34-point loss.
Wizards guard CJ McCollum led all scorers with 25, while Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 24 points as the Cavaliers moved to 6-3. The defeat dropped the Wizards to 1-8 through nine games this season.
