Canadian wrestling powerhouse Ben Tynan suffered his first career setback against Kirill Grishenko last August. Now he battles Japanese knockout artist Ryugo Takeuchi in heavyweight MMA at ONE Fight Night 40. This goes down on Friday, February 13, inside Bangkok’s Lumpinee Stadium.

The 31-year-old made his professional debut in 2022 following an undefeated amateur run that included capturing a Canadian Junior National Title and competing at NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. His charismatic persona and perfect finishing rate immediately captured attention when he joined ONE Championship in November 2023.

Tynan delivered a statement performance against Kang Ji Won at ONE Fight Night 16, securing the tap via arm-triangle choke in the third round while earning a $50,000 performance bonus. He demolished Duke Didier via first-round TKO at ONE Fight Night 21 in April 2024, though the bout was later declared a no contest. His winning ways ended at ONE Fight Night 34 last August when Grishenko handed him his first career setback.

Ryugo Takeuchi rebuilds momentum after Tokyo setback

Ryugo Takeuchi entered ONE Championship with a flawless slate but faced challenges early. After absorbing a TKO loss to Paul Elliott in April 2025, Takeuchi exploded back at ONE Fight Night 34 four months later.

He demolished Kang in just 98 seconds to announce his arrival as a serious divisional threat. His momentum proved fleeting when Turkish knockout machine Shamil Erdogan handed him defeat in front of his home crowd at ONE 173 in Tokyo last November. The 22-year-old tested his resolve and hunger for heavyweight supremacy with that setback on Japanese soil.

Takeuchi’s striking power remains his most dangerous weapon despite the inconsistent results. His ability to finish fights early has kept him relevant in the heavyweight conversation.

February’s heavyweight showdown delivers a classic striker versus grappler matchup. Takeuchi’s powerful stand-up arsenal faces its sternest test against Tynan’s elite wrestling pedigree.

The Canadian’s smothering top control and submission instincts create problems that strikers struggle to solve. Both fighters chase legitimacy after recent setbacks derailed their undefeated aspirations.

Victory positions the winner back on track toward divisional relevance while the loser faces an uphill battle to remain competitive among heavyweight contenders.
