James Toney rates Floyd Mayweather’s chances of ending retirement to beat Pacquiao

James Toney is not overly enthused by the prospect of Floyd Mayweather facing Manny Pacquiao, but has nonetheless offered a prediction for their potential rematch.

Their long-anticipated encounter finally took place in 2015, when Mayweather retained his WBC and WBA world welterweight titles with a clear unanimous decision victory.

After that, the American improved his record to 50-0 (27 KOs) with further wins over Andre Berto and Conor McGregor, but has remained out of a professional ring ever since.

Pacquiao, meanwhile, continued to compete at world level up to 2021, when he lost his WBA welterweight title via a unanimous verdict against Yordenis Ugas.

A near four-year layoff – excluding any exhibition matches – was then ended in July 2025, with ‘Pac Man’ entering an immediate world title shot against WBC champion Mario Barrios.

But despite the result of a draw, many believe that the Filipino, aged 46 at the time, had done enough to dethrone the WBC belt-holder at 147lbs.

Since then, Pacquiao has called for a lucrative rematch with Mayweather, whose only outings since 2017 have come via a string of exhibitions.

It is largely because of his inactivity in recent years that pound-for-pound legend Toney doubts whether Mayweather can replicate the success he enjoyed the first time around.

Speaking with ESNEWS, the Hall of Famer insisted that Pacquiao’s movement, in particular, would prove a significant factor in their possible rematch.

“Are you serious? I’m going to say Manny Pacquiao [wins their potential rematch]. He still has the movement, and I haven’t seen Floyd in like 10 years.”

It is just over 10 years ago, in fact, that Mayweather emerged triumphant against Pacquiao who, even back then, was widely thought to be well past his best.
