The Philadelphia 76ers announced on Tuesday that Tyrese Maxey suffered an injury to a tendon on the small finger of his right hand. The team will re-evaluate Maxey in three weeks.
The two-time All-Star injured the finger in a collision with teammate Adem Bona near the end of Philadelphia’s 125-116 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday. In a statement to reporters, the 76ers initially said Maxey would sit out for two games and undergo additional testing and consultation to determine a treatment plan.
Maxey has been the team’s best and most consistent player this season, averaging career highs in points (29.0), assists (6.7) and rebounds (4.1) with 46.1/37.3/89.3 shooting splits. According to NBA.com, the 76ers entered Tuesday ranked in the top 12 in offensive rating in Maxey’s 2,334 minutes on the court (115.4) and last in his 730 minutes on the bench (106.0).
“He’s meant everything to us,” 76ers teammate Kelly Oubre Jr. said after Saturday’s loss. “He’s carried us this season. He’s set such a good example for us this season as a hard worker. He’s been the heart and soul of our team. We need him.”
Maxey’s absence comes at a critical moment, as the 76ers (34-30) jockey for postseason positioning while missing several key contributors. Big man Joel Embiid will miss at least a couple more games, rookie guard VJ Edgecombe has missed three straight games and Paul George has multiple weeks remaining on his suspension for violating the league’s drug policy.
