Matt Fitzpatrick, Viktor Hovland, and Min Woo Lee are my three favorite bets to finish as the first-round leader at Royal Birkdale on Thursday.

Photo By – Reuters Connect. Viktor Hovland following the playoff in the 2026 Travelers Championship.

The final major of the golf season begins Thursday, July 16, and I’ve got a trio of British Open first-round leader picks for an early win at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England.

The British Open tee times begin at 1:35 a.m. ET with threesomes off the first, and I’ve analyzed the schedule, weather, featured groups, and recent form to determine my top three first-round leader picks at Kalshi — one of our best prediction market apps.

    💰 British Open first-round leader picks (2026)

    Golfer Kalshi Win probability Reason
Matt Fitzpatrick +3631 2.4% Fourth in Round 1 scoring average in 2026
Viktor Hovland +4801 1.9% Second in field in true strokes gained tee-to-green across past four events
Min Woo Lee +7094 1.3% 21 birdies and an eagle during solo-second in Scottish Open

⛳ Who’ll lead the British Open after Round 1?

Best first-round leader pick: Matt Fitzpatrick (+3631)

Tee time: 10:15 a.m. ET | Group: Rory McIlroy & Xander Schauffele

Fitzpatrick’s elite statistical profile includes ranking second in this field in true strokes gained tee-to-green and on approach this season while sitting third in both adjusted scoring average and bogey avoidance, and ranking fourth in Round 1 scoring.

    Viktor Hovland (+4801)

Tee time: 4:36 a.m. ET | Group: Russell Henley & Justin Rose

A recent ball-striking spike has Hovland ranked second in this field in true strokes gained tee-to-green across his past four events, and the heater includes a solo third at the RBC Canadian Open and a win in the Travelers Championship.

Hovland has also carded 43 birdies and an eagle over his past two tournaments.

    Min Woo Lee (+7094)

Tee time: 4:25 a.m. ET | Group: Ben Griffin & Hideki Matsuyama

This price caught my eye because Lee ranks 14th in birdie-or-better percentage and third in early scoring average.

He also made 21 birdies and an eagle during his solo-second finish in the Genesis Scottish Open last week while ranking fifth in the field in true strokes gained tee-to-green and 11th in putting.

📜 British Open first-round leader history

Here are the recent first-round leaders of the British Open, along with the tournament winner and their Round 1 scores:

Year First-round leader (score, finish) Tournament winner (R1 score)
2025 Harris English and four others (-4, solo second) Scottie Scheffler (-3)
    2024 Daniel Brown (-6, T10) Xander Schauffele (-2)
2023 Emiliano Grillo and two others (-5, T6) Brian Harman (-4)
2022 Cameron Young (-8, solo second) Cameron Smith (-5)
    2021 Louis Oosthuizen (-6, T3) Collin Morikawa (-3)

🌦️ Thursday’s weather at Royal Birkdale

Here is today’s British Open weather report from AccuWeather:

    Metric Forecast
    🌡️ Temperature 82°F (28°C) high
💨 Wind 8–14 mph from E to NE (20 mph gusts)
🌧️ Precipitation 10% chance (Minimal to no measurable rain)
☀️ Humidity 45% (Consistent with a warm, dry coastal heatwave)

While players will face fast and firm conditions during Round 1 of the 2026 Open Championship, the lack of difficult wind and precipitation will set the field up for excellent scoring opportunities at Royal Birkdale on Thursday.

⛅ What to consider when trading on the first-round leader

The first-round leader market of any golf tournament is far different than wagering on the tournament winner or any prop market.

Here are the factors I always consider with my first-round leader picks:

    • Tee times
    • Weather
    • Course history
    • Round 1 scoring average
    • Recent form
    • Key stats for the week

The first-round leader market is much more volatile than the 72-hole event. As such, the odds for tournament favorites are longer in this market, and the odds for the long shots are generally slightly shorter when trading on the 18-hole sample.

Early tee times are typically best to target for your picks. Courses are often at their softest and easiest, with no divots in the fairways or wear on the greens. But the weather can significantly change that line of thought. Monitor the weather to ensure your desired golfers will be dodging the worst of the rain and wind, should any be in the forecast.

I also greatly reduce my timeframe when looking at recent performance entering Thursday’s first round.
