There’s a ranked SEC matchup tonight at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Miss., and I’m breaking it down with my Missouri vs. Mississippi State prediction.
Mississippi State is the 6.5-point favorite, but my college football picks back the Tigers to cover. I’m also targeting the Over on the line of 58.5 and a first-quarter total when these teams take the field at 7:45 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
Who will win Missouri vs Mississippi State tonight? Pick: Missouri +6.5
I’m taking the Missouri Tigers to cover down to +5.
The market has moved the Mississippi State Bulldogs from a 2.5-point opening favorite to nearly a touchdown after their 3-0 start, but that adjustment has gone too far.
The metrics give Missouri the stronger prior profile, with a +0.27 adjusted EPA per play, sitting 19th nationally. The Tigers’ defense has also ranked ninth nationally in adjusted EPA per play.
Bulldogs QB Kamario Taylor has been a national darling, and for good reason. But this Tigers defense is well-equipped to make him earn scores on consistent drives rather than explosive ones. On the other side, QB Austin Simmons has opened with eight touchdown passes and one interception, and Missouri has already won on the road at Kansas.
Mississippi State can win, but Missouri is good enough to keep this game within one possession.

Play the Over on 58.5 to 52% or better.
The Over is still playable despite Missouri’s stronger defensive showings. The matchup gives the Tigers a direct path to points because Missouri’s rushing offense grades 14th nationally in EPA per rush, while Mississippi State’s run defense ranks 123rd.
That should keep Simmons from carrying every drive. The Bulldogs have scored 62, 38, and 41 points through three games, and their first-quarter home total has gone Over in five of the last six. The recent series between these teams has also gone Over in four straight meetings. I make this closer to 62 points, and although Missouri will do a decent job against Taylor, he’ll still produce enough highlight plays to get this Over.

This game should feature plenty of scoring, and the last team with the ball will likely hold a huge edge. This bet captures that script the best.

Mississippi State’s home games are a clear angle here. The Bulldogs have hit the first-quarter total Over in five of their last six home games, and the current number asks for only 13 points. That trend fits a team that’s repeatedly creating explosive plays early.
Missouri doesn’t need to win the quarter for this to cash, because one scoring drive from the Tigers plus a normal Mississippi State opening series is enough.
