The Vikings have agreed to terms to acquire Minnesota native and longtime wide receiver Adam Thielen from the Carolina Panthers, the teams announced Wednesday.

Carolina nets a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 fourth-round pick as part of the deal. The Vikings get a conditional 2026 seventh-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick alongside Thielen.

Why the Vikings made the deal

Thielen, 35, who played nine seasons in Minnesota, provides the Vikings with immediate receiver help. Minnesota had been in the receiver market since veteran Jalen Nailor injured his left hand last week. The Vikings also sought an addition, knowing third-year receiver Jordan Addison is suspended for the first three weeks of the season.

Why Thielen, specifically? He knows coach Kevin O’Connell’s complex system. He is a willing blocker. He and Vikings superstar receiver Justin Jefferson also remain close. This spring, Thielen also established a rapport with young quarterback J.J. McCarthy in workouts back in Minnesota.

Minnesota parted with Thielen in the spring of 2023 because of his hefty cap hit. O’Connell valued Thielen’s impact during his first season in the job, but Minnesota believed it needed to use its cap space elsewhere. Thielen, meanwhile, got a sizable three-year, $25 million deal from the Panthers. His production matched the pay.

Thielen caught 103 passes for 1,014 yards and four touchdowns in his first season in Carolina. Last year, he snagged 48 passes for 615 yards and five touchdowns in 10 games. The Vikings may not ask a ton of him on an every-down basis after the first few weeks, but his inclusion should keep the offense afloat during a critical early-season stretch.

What it means for the Panthers

It means they’re ready to roll with the Kiddy (WR) Corps. In dealing the 35-year-old Thielen, the Panthers’ starting receiving rotation will consist of a rookie in Tetairoa McMillan and a pair of second-year wideouts in Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker. GM Dan Morgan used first-round picks on McMillan and Legette with the idea they would be Bryce Young’s top targets for years to come.

Thielen was a 1,000-yard receiver in Young’s rookie season, but he was injured for much of 2024 and is nearing the end of a stellar career. After giving him a raise during the offseason, it felt like the Panthers de-emphasized Thielen’s role this summer. It didn’t make sense to pay him $9 million to be the fourth receiver.

The Panthers still have veteran David Moore. But beyond that, Morgan had better be right about McMillan, Legette and Coker being ready. If Young takes a step back this year, the Panthers could be back to square one.
