Derek Chisora set to be sacrificed one last time

Derek Chisora looks set to be thrown to the wolves one more time, with Turki Alalshikh revealing plans to match “WAR” against Jai Opetaia later in 2025.

The fight, which could act as Chisora’s 50th and final outing, has already drawn heavy criticism from fans who believe fight organizers are setting the veteran up to face a younger, fresher champion with little chance of victory.

    Alalshikh eyes Chisora vs Opetaia

Alalshikh, the driving force behind Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Season, stated his interest in pitting Chisora against the current IBF cruiserweight king.

Opetaia, 30, is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous active fighters in the sport, having dominated the cruiserweight division before considering a move to heavyweight.

For Chisora, now 41 and 36-13 as a pro, the prospect of sharing a ring with Opetaia at the tail end of his career has sparked concerns about previous assignments.

    Echoes of Usyk

Fans were quick to point out the similarities to Chisora’s clash with Oleksandr Usyk in 2020, when the Ukrainian, then an undefeated rising heavyweight, used the Londoner as his introduction to the division.

Usyk won comfortably on points, a result that paved the way for his eventual undisputed reign.

The fear is that history is about to repeat itself, with Chisora once again playing the role of stepping stone against a younger lion destined for the summit.

    A painful farewell?

While the 50th fight milestone is significant, many argue it should be a celebration of Chisora’s remarkable career rather than a punishing exit.

Social media reaction was scathing, with fans calling for a more fitting send-off than a likely beating at the hands of Opetaia.

Chisora, a cult favorite for his all-action style and willingness to face anyone, wanted a world title shot to bow out, or at least an interim chance.

The Briton has already endured countless wars across almost two decades at the top level. But the notion of promoters sacrificing Chisora in his farewell has left a sour taste.

Whether Alalshikh presses ahead with the plan or bows to the backlash remains to be seen. What is clear is that if Chisora does step through the ropes with Opetaia in late 2025, it will be one final act of bravery, or one fight too far.
