RANGERS have spoken to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Bo Svensson as candidates to replace Russell Martin.

Ex-Manchester United boss Solskjaer was sacked by Besiktas in August after only seven months in charge.

And SunSport understands that he was approached by Gers chiefs to discuss the vacancy at Ibrox.

Rangers have held face-to-face talks with a number of managerial candidates as part of a hunt which looked destined to lead to Steven Gerrard’s second coming – until the Liverpool legend ruled himself out.

Murmurs of a sensational Solskjaer appointment began when his former United team-mate, Paul Scholes, hinted at it on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast this week.

He said: “I was actually with a lad the other night who told me he was actually going to meet Rangers.”

When Nicky Butt asked whether it was Solskjaer, Scholes replied: “No comment.”

Ex-Mainz and Union Berlin boss Svensson was also courted by Rangers last week.

Talks were understood to have been positive and Svensson would have been keen to take over.

But the former Denmark international, 46, withdrew from the race over the weekend.

Rangers’ efforts to recruit a new boss have been frenetic and Svensson did not want to wait around.

Svensson was well-regarded at Mainz, where he saved the team from relegation in 2020/21 and kicked on thereafter.

The Bundesliga outfit then finished eighth and ninth in the subsequent two seasons.

Svensson’s next job, at Union Berlin, was comparatively short, and he has been out of work since last December.

Kevin Muscat, Danny Rohl and Derek McInnes are also believed to be in the running for the Ibrox hot seat.

Martin was given the chop earlier this month after overseeing just one win in his first seven league games.

The 39-year-old had to be snuck out of the Falkirk Stadium with a police escort after the 1-1 draw which proved to be his last stand.
