NRL convert Nelson Asofa-Solomona taking ‘delusion’ in his stride

Nelson Asofa-Solomona is embracing the “delusion” he believes goes with the territory of being a professional boxer.

On the occasion of his professional debut at heavyweight, following his departure from Australia’s National Rugby League, the New Zealander is fighting Jeremy Latimore of Australia – another former NRL professional – on the undercard of the 157lbs grudge match between Michael Zerafa and Nikita Tszyu.

At 39 years old Latimore, of Sydney, is the older fighter by 10 years. Asofa-Solomona, who built his reputation with NRL team Melbourne Storm, is also less experienced than his 1-0 opponent in his new sport.

If Latimore believes he has the edge in experience then there is little question that Asofa-Solomona is at his physical peak and a bigger, stronger and more explosive athlete, and it is therefore Latimore’s confidence that he is questioning ahead of their contest at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, Australia on January 16.

“With boxing it’s so much different than a team sport,” Asofa-Solomona said. “You’ve got to back yourself; you’ve got to be confident. I’m not surprised that’s he’s confident but what I’m discovering in boxing is that you’ve got to have somewhat of a delusion or be somewhat delusional and I think it’s on full display there.

“He’s done rounds with [former NRL professional-turned-boxer Paul Gallen] but he hasn’t done rounds with me. We’re going to find out.

“My fitness is good. You’ve got boxing fitness and you’ve got rugby league fitness – all I can say is I’m glad I’m not at a Craig Bellamy pre-season right now.

“I’m a big gentle giant but as the week approaches and closer to fight night I can feel the wheels turning a little bit. A bit of that warfare mindset is starting to get in my head and I think you’ll see a different Nelson when I get in the ring.

“You’ve got to respect anyone who gets in the ring. It’s not easy. I think the biggest thing is the mental warfare and I’m sure he’s going though a bit of it right now, knowing the power that I possess. Credit to him but I’m here to do a job January 16.

“I’ve prepared for every scenario. I’m looking for that highlight reel finish but I also want to show a bit of my boxing in there as well. I don’t want to get in there and just brawl.”
