Ecuador is going to have to fight for every single point in this one.

Only a win will do for Ecuador as they battle Curacao in Kansas City on Saturday, and La Tri are heavy favorites in the World Cup odds to pick up all three points.
Still, I’m wary of an overreaction to The Blue Wave’s thumping at the hands of Germany last Sunday, and my Ecuador vs. Curacao predictions are cautious about expecting a similar scoreline.

Who will win Ecuador vs Curacao: Curacao +2.5 (-116)
For 37 minutes, Curacao’s World Cup debut was an unquestionable success. The wheels came off in the second half against a ruthless German side, but I don’t expect a hangover from that result as The Blue Wave take on a desperate Ecuador squad this weekend.
Curacao won 50 duels in that outing (to Germany’s 47), and their compact 4-3-1-2 formation will pose questions for Ecuador, who were shut out against the Ivory Coast in their opener and managed just one shot on target.
With La Tri still relying on veteran Enner Valencia to lead the line, they finished with just 16 touches inside the Ivory Coast box in Sunday’s loss and have struggled to blow teams away in the past 18 months.
Ecuador have only won one of their last 11 contests by a margin of 2+ goals, so there’s a path for Curacao to cover this goal line and frustrate their higher-ranked opponents, led by Leandro Bacuna at the base of the midfield.
The potential for wet, stormy conditions at Arrowhead is another reason to back the underdogs to turn this into a scrappy battle, and I’d bet this up to -130.

Ecuador vs Curacao Over/Under pick: Under 3.5 (-154)
In line with what feels like a scrappy contest that’ll win no prizes for technical wizardry, I’m taking the Under on this 3.5-goal line. Look for Curacao to be more resolute in this second group game, while Ecuador didn’t score more than one goal in any of their final five qualifiers for this tournament.
La Tri aren’t equipped to launch the sustained attacks that Germany orchestrated last weekend, so I’m trusting Curacao to dig in and limit the clear-cut chances, with their narrow midfield forcing the play out to the wings.
Ecuador’s xG of 1.03 in their Group E opener spoke volumes about the team’s lack of cutting edge in the final third, and they haven’t served up more than three goals in any of their past 11 games.
If Dick Advocaat has cleaned up some of Curacao’s defensive miscues, there’s a roadmap to surviving the early pressure and making Valencia & Co. sweat.
Ecuador vs Curacao goal scorer pick: Gonzalo Plata (+120)
Ecuador will need a patient approach to break through a packed Curacao back line, and Gonzalo Plata stands out as a candidate to find the net — and even open the scoring at +450.
The Flamengo forward had one of Ecuador’s 12 shots against the Ivory Coast while playing the full 90 minutes, and he should see plenty of the ball here when Curacao sit deep.
Plata has the freedom to drift between the lines, and the next step in his development is to become a more prolific scorer. This clash with an inexperienced Curacao defense is an ideal chance to refine that clinical streak.
