LAS VEGAS — One day into free agency, the Los Angeles Lakers uncorked a series of rapid-fire moves. A trade for Walker Kessler. Deals with Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili and Collin Sexton quickly followed. Then, they traded Deandre Ayton for Jaden Hardy and second-round picks, and added Kevon Looney.
It was a complete overhaul of the roster — but the work wasn’t done.
On Monday, the Lakers continued to try to address a glaring need — wing athleticism — and agreed to a deal with Ziaire Williams, according to league sources who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the deal.
Williams, a teammate of Lakers guard Bronny James at Sierra Canyon High School, averaged 10.2 points while making a career-best 34.3 percent from 3 on 4.5 attempts per game. He turns 25 years old this September.
The Nets declined Williams’ 6.25 million option earlier this summer, making him a free agent.
Lakers take a chance on a young wing
Ziaire Williams is 25 years old and had a $10.3 million BORD$ valuation after having his best season in Brooklyn a year ago. He’s already filled a similar low-usage forward role on a good team when he was with the Grizzlies, and has a knack for off-ball cuts for alleyoops and dunks. Getting him on a minimum deal is tremendous value, something that can’t exactly be said for the Lakers’ other signings this July, and he fits this roster much better than Jonathan Kuminga. Overall, this might be my favorite move of the Laker offseason. — John Hollinger
