Remember the torpedo bat saga?
It was only the New York Yankees’ second game of the season, back in late March. They blasted a franchise-record nine home runs in a 20-9 rout of the Milwaukee Brewers, and all of a sudden, the odd-shaped bats — increasingly being used by the Yankees and across Major League Baseball — were all anyone was talking about. It feels like a long time ago.
Tuesday, the Yankees had another nine-homer game, this time against the Tampa Bay Rays, and our story didn’t even mention the word “torpedo.” It shows how quickly innovations can become the norm in sports.
