UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier became the latest former or current UFC star to respond to boxing champion Shakur Stevenson.
Boxing superstar Shakur Stevenson ruffled some feathers with comments he made earlier this week about Mixed Martial Arts and the UFC. Stevenson, sitting alongside Terence Crawford while on influencer Adin Ross’ stream, publicly called out Ilia Topuria and claimed boxing is superior to MMA.
This prompted a strong response from UFC welterweight Joaquin Buckley, who said he ‘could kill’ Stevenson or Crawford in a no-holds-barred fight. Buckley is one of the top knockout artists in modern MMA.
Enter UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier, an elite wrestler who also showcased impressive hands during his legendary career.
Daniel Cormier: Boxing ‘just not fun’ compared to UFC and MMA
In a recent video uploaded to his YouTube channel, Cormier took Buckley’s side against Stevenson’s fiery comments about MMA.
“Joaquin Buckley was right. It doesn’t have to be boxing, because the reality is, there’s no big fights like there were in the past,” Cormier said.
“I want it to be the boxing of the 70s, 80s, 90s. There aren’t enough big events to make us go back to the days when Ali was fighting, or when Tyson was fighting. When you had the four kings and they were all fighting each other. During Lennox Lewis’s time as being the heavyweight champion, it was different back then.
“Canelo fought Terence Crawford and it felt like a big event. But honestly, I don’t get super excited for these boxing fights until you get young prospects trying to knock people out like these guys in the past,” Cormier continued. “It’s just not that fun, whereas when you get to the UFC, it’s more fun, exciting, and it’s just better. Hats off to Joaquin Buckley for calling that s*** out, because he should’ve called it out. That’s just the god-honest truth.”
