Four people were killed, including a uniformed New York City police officer, and at least one was injured on Monday evening by a gunman who entered a Midtown Manhattan high-rise building that contains offices for several prominent companies, including the headquarters of the NFL.

In a news conference Monday night, New York Mayor Eric Adams said the gunman had died of an “apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Adams identified the police officer who died as 36-year-old Didarul Islam, a three-year veteran of the NYPD and an immigrant from Bangladesh. The other victims’ names, including another man and two women, have not been made public.

The NFL offices are located on the fifth through eighth floors of the building at 345 Park Ave., between 51st and 52nd Streets. In a statement to NFL staff, Commissioner Roger Goodell said one league employee was critically hurt in the shooting but did not give any specifics on their identity or injuries.

“One of our employees was seriously injured in this attack. He is currently in the hospital and in stable condition. NFL staff are at the hospital and we are supporting his family,” Goodell said. “We believe that all of our employees are otherwise safe and accounted for, and the building has nearly been cleared. We are deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers who responded to this threat quickly and decisively and to Officer Islam, who gave his life to protect others.”

Goodell said there will be increased security at the building, and said employees in New York should work remotely or take off entirely.

Jessica Tisch, the NYPD Commissioner, said the shooter is believed to be 27-year-old Shane Devin Tamura, who has a Las Vegas address. She noted Tamura has a “documented mental health history” and that any potential motive for the shooting remains unclear.

“We believe this to be a lone shooter and there is no active threat to the public,” she said.

Tisch said multiple 911 calls came in at 6:28 p.m. ET regarding the shooter. A security camera image shared by the NYPD showed the man identified as Tamura walking toward the building’s entrance with a long gun that Tisch described as an M4 rifle.

Tamura, Tisch said, shot four people on the building’s ground floor, including Islam, before proceeding to an elevator. He went to the offices of the real estate company Rudin Management on the 33rd floor, where he shot and killed another person. Rudin owns the high-rise building. Tisch said the shooter then shot himself in the chest.

Other companies with offices in the building include Deutsche Bank, the financial firm KPMG and investment management firm Blackstone.
