Touting himself as an ally of President Trump, Mark Teixeira, a former Texas Rangers first baseman and a World Series champion with the New York Yankees, announced Thursday that he is running for a congressional seat in Texas.

“As a lifelong conservative who loves this country, I’m running for Congress to fight for the principles that make Texas and America great,” Teixeira wrote in a social media post announcing his candidacy. “It takes teamwork to win — I’m ready to help defend President Trump’s America First agenda, Texas families, and individual liberty.”
Teixeira, 45, is seeking to represent Texas’ 21st Congressional District, which includes parts of San Antonio. The seat was vacated by Rep. Chip Roy, a Republican who is running for Texas attorney general. The district has been rated as solidly Republican by the Cook Political Report, though the seat attracted a large primary field the last time it became open.
After retiring from baseball in 2016, Teixeira, a three-time All-Star, has worked in charitable outreach such as education and Christian ministries. He and his wife moved back to Texas in 2021, when Teixeira began volunteering with Texas Public Policy Foundation.
Teixeira, who has never held elected office, was drafted fifth by the Rangers in the 2001 MLB Draft. He hit 409 home runs as a switch-hitting first baseman over a 14-year career with the Rangers, Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Angels and Yankees. Teixeira earned three Gold Gloves and three Silver Sluggers before he and the Yankees captured the World Series title in 2009.
