Canelo Alvarez was involved in one of the biggest grudge matches in boxing history with Gennady Golovkin, in a rivalry that’ll go down in history.

On September 13, Canelo Alvarez returns to the boxing ring when he takes on Terence Crawford in an undisputed super middleweight title fight.

Ahead of their huge super fight, which will take place from the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, the two came face to face earlier this year at the press conference, and they had to be held back by Dana White, who stopped a brawl breaking out.

The brewing rivalry will be something the Mexican is used to as he was involved in one of the biggest rivalries in boxing history with Gennady Golovkin.

Canelo tested positive for banned substance before rematch against Golovkin

In September 2017, Canelo and Golovkin met in the ring for the first time when they clashed for the Ring middleweight title, WBA and IBF middleweight titles.

The fight was covered in controversy as it was scored a split draw, despite a large majority of the boxing fanbase believing that Golovkin did enough to take the win.

After the fight, both Canelo and Golovkin openly agreed to an immediate rematch, but again, controversy struck in the lead up to their anticipated second clash.

At the end of January 2018, it was announced that the rematch was official but just a few months later, Canelo tested positive for clenbuterol and he was subsequently banned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Not long after, Alvarez officially withdrew from the fight and MGM Resorts began offering refunds to fans that had already purchased tickets. The Mexican was subsequently banned for six months, meaning his ban ended in August 2018.

The fight finally took place on September 15 but it was again covered in controversy as Alvarez went on to score the majority decision win, which was disputed by Golovkin’s team and a lot of the fanbase.

Canelo went on to put a stamp on his rivalry with Golovkin

After two extremely controversial clashes, it seemed inevitable that Canelo and ‘Triple G’ would meet again, and they did for a third time in 2022.

Following his rematch loss to the Mexican, Golovkin went on to score four wins in a row, setting up for their huge trilogy.

The third fight, though, was far more cut and dry than their first two and Canelo went on to score the unanimous decision win, putting any previous controversies to bed.
