Packers fans chant, ‘Thank you, Jerry,’ as Micah Parsons delivers again

Green Bay Packers fans are entirely behind their new star edge rusher, Micah Parsons.

“Thank you, Jerry!” chants broke out during Parsons’ postgame interview with Amazon Prime’s “Thursday Night Football” crew after the Packers beat the Washington Commanders 27-18. It was a nod to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who let his star player go after months of messy contract negotiations.

The situation turned sour as Jones refused to engage with Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, claiming he and Parsons had already reached an agreement in a prior meeting.

Parsons was traded to Green Bay on Aug. 28 and signed a four-year, $188 million blockbuster deal, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. However, the way things fizzled out with his former team left the No. 1 pick with a chip on his shoulder.

“The guys were so welcoming,” Parsons said in the TNF interview of his arrival in Green Bay. “I don’t think there was any hate or envy, they’re just like ‘you’re one of them guys, you’re a special player.’ From the very beginning, they just embraced me, challenged me to go out there and be great.

“Overall, just doing what I do, it doesn’t matter who it is. It could be the best offensive tackle. Your All-Pro. I gotta go win. I gotta win now. And that’s just the rage in me, like, I’m pissed off.”

Over his first two games with the Packers, Parsons has recorded 1.5 sacks. He’s playing on a limited snap count (73 across two games) due to an ongoing back issue. However, the 26-year-old told the media he’s ready to put that behind him, too.

“Can’t hold a dog back forever,” Parsons said of his snap counts.

Parsons said being back on the field has been a “relief” after an offseason full of drama. He described Lambeau Field as “top-tier.”

“Obviously, amazing fan base,” Parsons said. “The second thing is just really how nice it is out here. Even just the stadium, the facilities. … It’s the best I’ve seen.”

The Packers, who are 2-0 for the first time since 2020, are taking things week by week. However, that hasn’t stopped Parsons from glancing ahead to the Sept. 28 road trip to face his former Dallas Cowboys team.

“Obviously, my family and everyone’s looking forward to it. But I’m just going to let the actions talk,” Parsons said. “It’s just going to be funny because all my friends are there … so just going against those guys, it’s going to be heartbreaking, but, damn, I’m excited for the matchup.”

How Parsons is dominating outside the stat sheet

While Parsons’ box score lines don’t necessarily jump out over his first two games with the Packers, his influence on their so-far dominant defense is undeniable.

On Thursday night, Parsons had a team-high eight pressures, according to Next Gen Stats. One forced Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels into a third-down incompletion preceding a missed 58-yard field goal and one sped up Daniels into a meager 1-yard scramble, to name a few. Those don’t show up on the stat sheet.

He drew a holding penalty (while still managing to split a sack on the play) and a false start and faced double- and triple-teams to create one-on-ones for other defensive linemen that may not have previously had them. Those don’t show up on the stat sheet.

Cornerback Keisean Nixon was asked postgame about the defense’s enhanced swagger, and his blunt answer was, “Yeah, we got Micah Parsons.” That doesn’t show up on the stat sheet.

So far, Parsons has been worth every penny of his record-breaking extension. He might not be full-go just yet, but he should be unleashed by the time the Packers visit Parsons’ former team in two weeks.

If Parsons’ production through two games shows what he’s capable of while still recovering from a back injury and an offseason of not playing football, opponents might not want to find out what he’s capable of when fully ramped up. — Matt Schneidman, Packers beat writer
