Still arrived at Southampton in the summer from Lens having spent seven years learning his trade in Belgium and France.

But his anticipated move into English football has lasted just three months after being dismissed by the Championship strugglers.

Still lasted just 13 league games, winning only two of them and losing five.

And after a run of three defeats, the Saints board responded by parting ways with the 33-year-old.

A statement read: “Southampton Football Club can confirm that we have this evening parted ways with Men’s First Team Manager Will Still.

“Rubén Martinez, Clément Lemaitre and Carl Martin have also left their positions at the club.

“Men’s Under-21s Head Coach Tonda Eckert will take charge of the team on an interim basis.

“Group Technical Director Johannes Spors said: “Will is a great person who gave everything to try and improve performances and results.

“Ultimately that process has taken longer than any of us would have liked. By making a change now we believe it gives us the best chance of turning things around this season and climbing back up the league table.

“I would like to thank Will, Rubén, Clément and Carl for their efforts and wish them well for the future.”

Still was expecting to fight for his job after defeat to Preston.

He said: “I know where we are in the league and what that looks like from the outside “I am not going to give up or feel sorry for myself.

“I will fight as long as I’m here. I’m not going to stop trying but I don’t think it is an instant fix either – you don’t come into a place like this and click your fingers.

“We don’t have to look further than our four walls. We have bags of talent in that dressing room.

“There is no point looking for excuses or saying ‘this isn’t fair’ or ‘isn’t nice’. We need to grow a pair and get on with it. It is a fragile environment.

“The players are struggling for confidence in games.”
