Falkirk overcame Hearts, the Scottish Premiership leaders, 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw to book their place in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup, on a day when both Edinburgh’s top-flight teams were losers.

Faklkirk – beaten twice by their opponents in the league this season – went ahead through the substitute Ben Parkinson in the second half. Lawrence Shankland levelled from the penalty spot to take the game into extra time after Islam Chesnokov, who was given his debut from the bench, was brought down in the box.

Elton Kabangu was the only player to miss from the spot and it was left to Parkinson, who joined Falkirk this month from Newcastle, to net the winning penalty for John McGlynn’s side.

Dunfermline sent Hibernian tumbling out after the unfortunate Miguel Chaiwa scored an own goal in stoppage time to send the Championship club through. Kieran Ngwenya’s header from a Matty Todd corner hit the back of the Zambia midfielder before rolling into the net to break the stalemate.

Both teams had chances either side of the break, but Hibs were left to rue two big opportunities that were passed up by Kieron Bowie and Thibault Klidjé. The Dunfermline manager, Neil Lennon, lapped up the full-time celebrations with his players after beating the team he managed for two and a half years.

East End Park was packed with more than 4,000 Hibs fans who made the short journey over the Forth. Their team created the first attempt at goal, but Rocky Bushiri’s header from a Jordan Obita cross took a deflection before easily being collected by Deniz Mehmet. At the other end the Dunfermline defender Nurudeen Abdulai looped a harmless header on to the roof of the net.

The Hibs captain, Joe Newell, was handed his first start since December 2024 and the midfielder enjoyed plenty of the ball early on as he kept his team ticking over. Mehmet was called into action again to palm away a Jamie McGrath delivery that looked like it was sneaking into the top corner.

It was a game that lacked any real flow but Mehmet got the better of Bowie in a one-on-one duel before the break. The Scotland striker was sent free by Junior Hoilett, but his shot hit the legs of the keeper.

Dunfermline came close to opening the scoring at the start of the second half. Andrew Tod ran on to Zak Rudden’s knockdown before unleashing a fierce drive that was beaten away by Rafa Sallinger. Rudden kept the move alive, but his pass for the striker was just out of reach inside the six-yard box.

Dunfermline kept the pressure up, but Hibs weathered the storm and forced Mehmet into a save. Jeremiah Chilokoa-Mullen’s defensive header fell straight to Hoilett and his fizzing half-volley from the corner of the box was tipped over by Mehmet.

Klidjé should have put Hibs ahead in the 75th minute, but his header from six yards out from an Obita cross was straight at Mehmet.

But it was Dunfermline that scored a dramatic late winner. After Sallinger tipped a Ngenywa effort over the bar, the defender was involved in the decisive goal. Ngwenya got on the end of another Todd corner and his header struck Chaiwa before going in.

St Mirren edged past Livingston on penalties to keep their hopes of a cup double alive. The two sides played out a 1-1 draw in their fourth-round tie before the Buddies prevailed 4-3 in the shootout. Jeremy Bokila blazed Livingston’s first penalty over the bar and after Livi’s Tete Yengi and St Mirren’s Richard King had tame efforts saved, Malik Dijksteel converted the decisive kick.

Roland Idowu rolled the ball in at the back post after three minutes for the visitors, with Scott Arfield replying on his first start in Livi colours with a fine finish shortly after.

Drey Wright’s last-minute goal helped Dundee come from behind to knock nine-man Kilmarnock out at Rugby Park with a 2-1 win. The home side led at the break through Dominic Thompson before Ashley Hay equalised midway through the second half.

Jack Thomson was the first Kilmarnock player dismissed for a second booking before Dundee found what proved to be the winning goal through Wright after a mix-up between Kelle Roos and Robbie Deas. Lewis Mayo was then shown a straight card in stoppage time .

Dundee United battled through with two late goals against Ayr . The Championship side had frustrated the hosts with the game looking likely to be heading for extra time. However, substitute Nikolaj Moller broke the deadlock with Panutche Camara, another substitute, adding a second late on.

Tawanda Maswanhise’s second-half goal proved enough for Motherwell to earn a deserved 1-0 victory over Ross County at Fir Park. The much-changed Steelmen laboured in the first half, but were better after the break as the Zimbabwe international – who could have had a hat-trick – flicked home the opener just after the hour mark.

Motherwell passed up a number of opportunities to extend their lead, while they had Matty Connelly to thank as he saved from Kieran Phillips in the closing moments as County mustered a rare chance.

In the round’s opening tie on Friday Bojan Miovski helped himself to a hat-trick in Rangers’ commanding 5-0 win over Annan as the new signing Andreas Skov Olsen checked in at Ibrox.

The North Macedonia striker, fired Rangers into the lead in the 12th minute against the League Twovisitors before heading in a second just after the half-hour mark.

Midfielder Kieran Dowell added a third early in the second half with a header – his first goal of the season – and Miovski grabbed his third in the 74th minute with a penalty before the substitute Thelo Aasgaard scored a terrific free-kick from 30 yards with three minutes remaining.

The round concludes on Sunday, with Aberdeen hosting Raith and Celtic travelling to Auchinleck Talbot.
