    Should Steelers hire Sean McDermott?

The offseason has begun for 28 teams around the NFL, 10 of whom will have different head coaches. The New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons have each hired former AFC North head coaches, as John Harbaugh is the new head man for the Giants, and the Falcons have hired Kevin Stefanski.

The remaining eight teams will have quite a pool of coaches to seek out, and a new name has joined that group. The Buffalo Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott after nine seasons. The Bills made the playoffs in every year but one, but the Bills failed to reach the Super Bowl with Josh Allen. Their loss to the Denver Broncos in the divisional round was the final straw for McDermott, and he was let go.

Considering McDermott’s success (98-50 record, 8-8 in the postseason), he will be a name that skyrockets to the top of many lists. He and former Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin have a relationship stemming back from their playing days together at William & Mary, and McDermott went to high school in Pennsylvania.

If the Steelers wanted a head coach with a proven track record of success, perhaps they’d give McDermott a serious look. However, their past tells a different story, as the franchise hires young, first-time head coaches in hopes of keeping them around for the long term. McDermott is still just 51, so he can still coach for at least a decade should he want to go that long.
