Syracuse heads to Pittsburgh as a double-digit underdog, but Steve Angeli and an experienced defense give the Orange a path to stay competitive Thursday night.

Who will win Syracuse vs Pittsburgh: Syracuse +10.5
The Syracuse Orange down to +8.5 is my top pick because its talent composite score at 247sports.com ranks 37th nationally, compared to the Pittsburgh Panthers, which rank 61st, and Orange QB Steve Angeli should bounce back from a three-interception outing vs. California last week.
Angeli was one of the best quarterbacks in the country through his first four games last year before suffering a season-ending injury. The Orange were 3-1 with Angeli, including a 34-21 upset of Clemson, and lost all eight games without him.
Also, Syracuse played better on a down-to-down basis in its 21-18 loss to California last week. The Orange were +0.8 in yards per play and converted 10 more first downs (27-17). However, they peed down their legs by committing 14 penalties and losing the turnover battle 3-0.
If Syracuse cleans up the miscues, it’ll keep this a single-digit game.

Syracuse vs Pittsburgh Over/Under pick: Under 51.5
The total is suspiciously high, considering the Under has cashed in seven of the last eight Syracuse-Pittsburgh meetings. However, their only Over during this eight-game stretch had a 38.5-point total and it only went Over by 2.5 points. I lean toward the Under down to 49.5 here.
Orange head coach Fran Brown coached Georgia’s defensive backs from 2022-23 and they rank ninth nationally in returning defensive production this season, per ESPN college football analyst Bill Connelly. Plus, the Panthers rank 99th nationally in seconds per play.
Pittsburgh already plays at one of the slower tempos in the country, and I’m expecting Syracuse to be comfortable turning this into a lower-possession game because of its defensive experience.
Syracuse vs Pittsburgh prop: First Half Under 26.5
The first half Under has cashed in eight of Syracuse’s previous 11 games. Furthermore, the Orange should have Angeli drop back to pass less in this game after he threw three interceptions against California last week.
Pitt has allowed just 14 total points in its first two games: 59-14 win over Miami, Ohio, and a 12-7 win over UCF. I could see the Panthers trying to establish the run early in this game because they gave up seven sacks against Syracuse last year.
Syracuse vs Pittsburgh combo
The Under correlates with the underdog, and since Pittsburgh is the favorite, it’ll probably dictate the game’s flow. Syracuse can sneak in the backdoor for a cover without the Over hitting because both offenses are bad and both defenses are good on late downs.
Lastly, given Pitt’s slow pace and the Orange’s mistakes last week, they might spend the first quarter figuring each other out.
