COVENTRY CITY ace Josh Eccles has revealed the freak injury that left him growing an EXTRA BONE in his leg.

The 25-year-old midfielder finally made his return to action in the Sky Blues’ goalless draw at Leicester last weekend after being crocked by one of the strangest football injuries you’ll ever hear.

Eccles missed all of pre-season after suffering the problem during the play-off semi-final defeat to Sunderland back in May.

He told BBC CWR: “It was a bizarre injury.

“I got a dead-leg twice in the same spot within five minutes and had to come off.

“Normally it heals in a couple of weeks. But after three, it was getting worse, so I asked for a scan.

“Turns out there was so much blood around the bone that my body thought it needed to heal it and started growing new bone tissue!”

That’s right — the Coventry-born star has effectively grown a new bone in his left leg.

He added: “Technically right now, there’s an extra bone that’s been growing for two months.”

Eccles, who came through City’s academy, has racked up 162 appearances and signed a new deal last November keeping him at the club until 2028.

But he admits the summer was tough and painful.

He added: “Even lifting my leg was super-painful. I was thinking, ‘Is this going to affect the rest of my career?’

“But the more I trained, the more the pain faded. I’m back to normal now.”

Known for his aggressive style, Eccles feared the injury might change his game.

But the Leicester cameo showed he’s lost none of his bite.

Eccles said: “That aggressiveness will always be part of me.”

Eccles came off the bench in the 76th minute at the King Power and is now targeting a major role in Coventry’s latest Championship promotion charge.

He added: “No one expected it to be such a long injury. Missing pre-season set me back, so it was a great feeling just to get some minutes.”

He’ll be in the squad again for Saturday’s lunchtime clash with Birmingham City and this time, he’s hoping the only thing growing is Cov’s points tally.
