A surprising name has entered the mix to fight Amanda Nunes: Jake Paul’s superstar teammate and longtime boxing champ Amanda Serrano.
UFC 324 suffered a big blow just under two weeks before the event as UFC women’s bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison was forced to withdraw from her fight with Amanda Nunes due to injury.
Harrison, who won the UFC women’s bantamweight championship at UFC 316, suffered a neck injury in camp and will undergo surgery soon. She’s expected to miss around six months before being medically cleared to compete.
As of this writing, it’s uncertain whether or not Nunes will remain on the card or will remain on the sidelines amidst Harrison’s absence. Top contender Norma Dumont recently called her out for a short-notice booking at UFC 324.
But another top name, boxing world champion Amanda Serrano, wants to resume her three-fight MMA career on short-notice against the greatest of all-time.
Amanda Serrano sends message to Amanda Nunes, UFC ahead of UFC 324
In a recent tweet, Serrano sent a message to Nunes and the UFC brass ahead of UFC 324.
“If UFC and Amanda Nunes are thinking of a replacement, I would love the challenge as I’m still in fight shape,” Serrano posted Wednesday.
“Hope the champ recovers well.”
Serrano made her professional MMA debut in April 2018, fighting to a draw against Corina Herrera. She went on to pick up back-to-back submission victories in 2018 and 2021, and hasn’t fought in the cage since iKON FC 7.
Serrano is regarded as one of the greatest female boxers in the sport’s history, most recently defeating Reina Tellez on January 3rd to retain her featherweight titles. The win snapped a two-fight losing streak to Katie Taylor.
As of this writing, the UFC’s plans for Nunes are uncertain, as is a potential Serrano signing. In the meantime, hats off to Serrano for expressing willingness to face the best under the roughest circumstances.
