Hall of Fame Asked if Zuffa Boxing Titles Will Count Toward Induction for Fighters

World Boxing News has contacted the International Boxing Hall of Fame seeking clarification on whether title bouts held under the Zuffa Boxing banner would count toward future Hall of Fame induction.

The question arises as the new promotion begins staging events with its own championship structure, separate from the traditional sanctioning bodies that have defined boxing for decades and shaped how fighters’ legacies are ultimately judged.

With Zuffa launching a league-style format and introducing its own titles, uncertainty remains over how those achievements might be viewed historically, especially for fighters whose careers could one day be judged alongside the sport’s greats.

    Zuffa Boxing Titles

One fighter who brings the issue into immediate focus is cruiserweight knockout artist Jai Opetaia.

The Australian cruiserweight is widely regarded as a potential future Hall of Famer if he can fulfill the goals he has spoken about, first by clearing out the cruiserweight division and then moving up in pursuit of a heavyweight title.

At present, Opetaia is also the only fighter competing under the Zuffa banner whose career trajectory has already sparked genuine Hall of Fame discussion, making his situation the first real test of how Zuffa Boxing titles could be viewed in boxing history.

However, Opetaia is now competing under the Zuffa Boxing banner following his recent bout with Brandon Glanton in Las Vegas.

That fight did not count as an IBF title defense after the sanctioning dispute surrounding the event, raising an obvious question about how similar bouts may be viewed from this point on.

If Opetaia continues fighting primarily under the Zuffa structure, potentially as a Zuffa champion rather than as a titleholder with the WBC, WBA, IBF, or WBO, the long-term standing of those accomplishments is not yet clear.

WBN reached out to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota to ask whether victories in Zuffa Boxing title fights would be treated in the same way as bouts contested for the sport’s established championships when careers are assessed for Hall of Fame consideration.

At the time of publication, no response had been received despite World Boxing News giving the IBHOF more than a week to respond.

No public guidance has yet been issued on how achievements under the Zuffa system might be viewed alongside the sport’s traditional championship structure.

    Hall of Fame Concerns

The concern has already surfaced elsewhere in boxing.

IBF super lightweight champion Richardson Hitchins recently voiced concern about the implications of signing with Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing, particularly what could happen to his IBF title if a similar sanctioning dispute were to arise.

For fighters considering whether to compete under the new banner, clarity on how those bouts are viewed historically could prove significant.

If accomplishments outside the traditional sanctioning-body structure are ultimately judged differently, that could become a serious factor when boxers weigh up whether to pursue opportunities under Dana White’s new promotion.

Until the Hall of Fame or other recognized bodies provide guidance, the question remains open as Zuffa Boxing continues to build its roster and title credentials.

The broader regulatory picture may also matter. Proposed changes to the Muhammad Ali Act, if eventually approved, could influence how new league-style boxing promotions are integrated into the sport’s existing framework.

For now, the Hall of Fame’s position on Zuffa Boxing title fights remains unclear.
