Ultimate Fighting Championship is making it quite possible for
the home country fans in China to go home happy that night.
With the first report coming from Russian outlet Red Fury MMA on
Wednesday and later confirmed by both athletes on their respective
Instagram
pages, Umar
Nurmagomedov (20-1) will throw down with Yadong Song
(23-9-1, 1 NC) on Aug. 29. The two will headline
UFC Shanghai, which will be held at the Shanghai Indoor Stadium
in China’s most populous city. It will be the first event on
mainland China in a year, with the 2025 offering a Fight Night
headlined by Johnny
Walker and Mingyang
Zhang. They remain the lone combatants scheduled on the billing
thus far.
A tale of two Figueiredo frustraters
Both men celebrate their last victory over former flyweight kingpin
Deiveson
Figueiredo, with the man from China landing a submission while
the once-beaten athlete needed three rounds to get it done.
Nurmagomedov has won twice since he fell short to Merab
Dvalishvili for the bantamweight throne at the beginning of
2025. He took home decisions of Mario
Bautista and the aforementioned Figueiredo in January. While
briefly linked to a match against David
Martinez a few weeks earlier, the promotion elected to slot him
into this five-rounder instead.
Still just 28 years of age, Song has alternated wins and losses in
his last five outings. While he has taken home decision over
Chris
Gutierrez and Henry
Cejudo—the latter a technical varietal when Cejudo could not
continue due to eye pokes and the match went to the scorecards. In
the same stretch, he fell short by decision to past and future
champ Petr
Yan, as well as ex-beltholder Sean
O’Malley on the same event that Nurmagomedov bested
Figueiredo.
