Longtime Nationals executives depart under new president of baseball ops: Sources

The Nationals have begun making significant personnel changes under new president of baseball operations Paul Toboni, with the departures of more than a half-dozen employees, including assistant general managers Eddie Longosz and Mark Scialabba, league sources told The Athletic on Wednesday.

The entire list of changes is unknown, but sources told The Athletic the organization also parted ways with several scouts and members of the team’s staff in Florida. Mike DeBartolo, who served as interim GM and was a candidate to lead baseball ops, will remain with the organization, the sources say.

Both Longosz and Scialabba were longtime employees under former president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo. Longosz became vice president and assistant general manager of player development and administration in November 2023 after serving as director of scouting operations for eight years.

Scialabba joined the Washington Nationals in 2006 and worked a variety of roles in player development before spending the last four years as AGM and director of player personnel.

The changes are just the start of what is expected to be a major shakeup under Toboni, who was formally introduced in a press conference at Nationals Park last week. The 35-year-old spent his entire career in Boston and was expected to be promoted this winter to GM under Craig Breslow before Toboni interviewed and accepted the head job in Washington, D.C.

The Nationals have not had a winning season since they won the World Series in 2019. Both Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez were fired midseason.
