PLYMOUTH ARGYLE apologised for forgetting to hold a minute’s applause for the late great Johnny Newman and promised they will rectify that “oversight”.
Newman died at the age of 91 following a stunning career that saw him amassing nine goals in 298 appearances for Plymouth.

The Pilgrims paid tribute to the legendary centre-back across their social media channels as well as their website.
However, Argyle didn’t hold a minute’s applause for the former defender on Saturday’s League One clash against Northampton Town at Home Park.
That led to fan frustration and so the club recognised their error and vowed to pay tribute in their next home match against Bradford City on Saturday.
In fact, the League One outfit invited Newman’s family to join them as they celebrate the legendary player’s life.

Plymouth issued the following statement: “At Saturday’s home game against Bradford City, we will honour former Argyle defender Johnny Newman, who passed away last week.
“We understand fans’ frustrations at us not acknowledging Johnny’s legacy at last weekend’s match, and despite recognising him across our online channels, we realise this was not enough.
“This was an oversight from the club due to a number of factors, but this is not an excuse and we should have done better.
“We will now rectify that this weekend, with a minute’s applause ahead of kick-off against the Bantams, and have invited Johnny’s family to join us for Saturday’s game.”
Newman’s 21-year career kicked off in 1951 when he joined Birmingham City.
After six years with Birmingham he moved to Leicester until 1960 when he decided to join Plymouth.
That is where he rose to prominence during an impressive seven-year stint before moving to Exeter City where he retired in 1972.
Newman also worked as a manger for the likes of Exeter, Grimsby Town, Derby County and hometown club Hereford United.
