    Heavyweight contender Agron Smakici says he would take a fight with Tyson Fury now that the former heavyweight champion has confirmed his return and announced his next bout.

    Smakici (21-3, 19 KOs), who infamously sparred with Fury previously, believes there is still unfinished business between them and says he remains adamant about how their controversial session played out.

    Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) suffered the reopening of a cut at the hands of Smakici, which delayed a high-profile undisputed title fight with Oleksandr Usyk. The gash had been caused by Otto Wallin a few years earlier, which cutman Jorge Capetillo managed to control enough to save Fury’s undefeated record in Las Vegas.

    Having discussed the cut at the time with WBN, Smakici revisited the incident this week and exclusively told World Boxing News that he felt in control early when trading with Fury and disputes suggestions that the damage came from an elbow.

    “The memories that we have from sparring. Where I was controlling the sparring from the first round, the second round.

    “He put my head down and pushed my head so when I picked up my head, I started to throw punches even harder.

    “I rocked him with a couple of shots, and the last shot was with a cut, and they say that it was with an elbow, but it wasn’t, it was a real punch.

    “He didn’t complain about the elbow; he just threw a shot, stopped the sparring, and went out.”

    Fury’s age, form, and the retirement cycle

    Fury is approaching 40 and has confirmed his return against Arslanbek Makhmudov on April 11, but Smakici does not view age alone as a barrier in today’s heavyweight division.

    “Thirty-eight, thirty-nine, forty, many fighters are like that in the heavyweight division. It’s not old, it’s a great age, and I think he can put himself in great shape and achieve much more.”

    However, Smakici said Fury’s most recent performances in two losses against Usyk did not meet the level required to win at the top end.

    “Both performances were ok but not enough to get a victory, especially the second fight. Tyson Fury doesn’t move as he did before. He is too heavy. He doesn’t move his body. It wasn’t so good.”

    Smakici also suggested Fury’s repeated retirement declarations have become part of the build-up rather than a final decision.

    “He has said many times that he is retired, but then he comes back. I think it’s more about the show and to make people more excited about returning to fight.”

    Smakici said he has already been asked about the possibility of facing Fury and would take the opportunity.

    “I got the call from Sky Sports, I’m not sure, and he asked me if I am interested in having a fight with Fury, and I said yes, of course.

    “We’ve got something that we didn’t finish, and he owes me an apology.”

    If Fury takes a different route later this year and faces Fabio Wardley, Smakici still sees danger in that matchup but favors Fury to come through it.
