Things haven’t gone according to plan for Matt Campbell in his first year in Happy Valley, as Penn State has suffered defeats in his first four Big Ten games as head coach.
My Purdue vs. Penn State prediction explains why picking up that first victory on Saturday won’t be easy, despite the Nittany Lions (-9.5) being strong favorites.

Who will win Purdue vs Penn State: Purdue +9.5
I was already planning to take Purdue +8.5, so I’m thrilled to have gotten another point and will back this to 54%.
Purdue’s offense is at its best when it can run the football, allowing Ryan Browne to operate off play-action. The Boilermakers are set up perfectly to do just that against a Penn State defense ranked 86th in EPA per rush.
On the other side, fans are calling for a change at quarterback, while the Nittany Lions offense ranks 106th in rushing success and 113th in EPA per rush.
That sets up a game script in which the Penn State defense will struggle to get stops, while the offense won’t sustain enough drives to win by double digits.

Purdue’s passing attack ranks 20th in success rate, bolstering a 28th-ranked offense in net adjusted EPA/play. It’s a key reason the Over is 6-1 in Purdue’s seven games this season, and why I’m backing the Over 54.5 up to 54% as my top pick.
Penn State’s defense ranks ninth in EPA per pass, but that ranking is somewhat misleading, given how easily USC’s passing attack moved the ball through the air.
Meanwhile, Purdue’s defense ranks 126th in EPA per pass, 121st in EPA/run, 131st in early-down success rate, and 129th in available yards allowed.
If Rocco Becht struggles, I expect Alex Manske to provide a spark and put points on the board for Penn State.

The Nittany Lions will likely earn their first Big Ten win, but it’ll be a close, high-scoring affair.
