Christian Mbilli Responds to Crawford’s Comments, Addresses Martinez Rematch

New WBC super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli has responded to Terence Crawford’s comments suggesting Lester Martinez should hold the title, addressing the situation while outlining his own plans as champion.

Crawford recently voiced support for Martinez on social media following Mbilli’s elevation to full champion status.

Martinez fought Mbilli to a draw on the Canelo Alvarez undercard on September 13, a result that left the WBC interim title situation unresolved.

    Mbilli addresses Crawford’s comments

Speaking exclusively to World Boxing News, Mbilli played down Crawford’s remarks, saying he understood the motivation behind them.

“Crawford can say what he wants. I don’t take it personally,” Mbilli said. “I think he just wants to help his friend, and I don’t blame him for doing so. People will always have this or that to say, including Crawford, but nobody becomes champion by listening to outside noise. And I think Crawford knows that.”

    Unfinished business with Martinez

Following the draw in September, the WBC ordered an immediate rematch on September 17. However, the bout never materialized.

Crawford, the titleholder at the time, later announced his retirement, after which the WBC elevated Mbilli from interim to full champion.

Martinez remains undefeated and is widely expected to be named the WBC mandatory challenger if he continues winning.

Mbilli acknowledged that a second fight with Martinez remains likely, though he would prefer a different route in the immediate future.

“I think we will fight again eventually,” Mbilli said. “But next, I would prefer to fight a big name — Canelo, Munguia, Sheeraz, Plant, Berlanga, or Charlo. A big fight, you know?”

He added that a delay could ultimately benefit both fighters.

“To be honest, I wish the same for Martinez, so when we meet again, people talk about Mbilli–Martinez 2 as a mega fight.”

For now, Mbilli appears focused on establishing himself as champion while allowing the WBC process to play out regarding its mandatory challenger.
