The San Francisco Giants and right-hander Tyler Mahle are in agreement on a one-year deal, a source confirmed to ESPN on Wednesday.

Mahle, 31, was one of baseball’s best starters for the Texas Rangers in 2025, posting a career-best 2.18 ERA. But a shoulder injury shelved him for three months, limiting him to 16 starts. He finished 6-4 with 66 strikeouts to 29 walks across 86⅔ innings.

The veteran joins a rotation topped by All-Stars Logan Webb and Robbie Ray. The Giants also signed right-hander Adrian Houser to a two-year, $22 million deal earlier this month to bolster a group that ranked 17th in the majors with a 4.10 ERA last season and had Justin Verlander hit free agency. Other internal options to start games include Landen Roupp, Carson Whisenhunt, JT Brubaker, Hayden Birdsong, and Blade Tidwell.

The Giants also signed relievers Sam Hentges and Jason Foley to major-league deals for bullpen depth this winter, but it’s otherwise been a quiet offseason for San Francisco coming off a third-place 81-81 season in the National League West.

Mahle will enter his 10th season with his fourth team. He spent his first five-plus seasons with the Cincinnati Reds before stints with the Texas Rangers and Minnesota Twins. Overall, he is 39-46 in 144 games (141 starts) with a 4.07 ERA and 753 strikeouts.

Injuries have limited Mahle to 24 starts and 125 innings over the past three seasons. He missed the first four months of the 2024 season with Texas while recovering from elbow surgery and then was sidelined again with shoulder tightness.

Mahle’s deal with the Giants was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
