2025 Season Recap
Jameson Williams has officially put the slow, injury- and off-field trouble-stunted start of his early career completely in the rearview mirror. After a quiet first two years, the blazing-fast wideout achieved back-to-back 1,000-yard, 7+ TD seasons, something only three other WRs can say (Courtland Sutton, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Ja’Marr Chase). He wrapped up his 2025 campaign with a career-high 65 receptions for 1,117 yards and seven TDs. Importantly, he also crossed the 100 target threshold for the first time last year.
He has established himself as one of the premier field-stretchers in the NFL, averaging an elite 17.2 yards per reception. He even finished 2025 tied for the ninth-most receiving yards in the entire league.
Despite this incredible efficiency, Williams still finished as a fringe WR2 in fantasy formats. His weekly production was heavily reliant on the “big play”. Also, memories may sour on his 2025 because he was wildly inconsistent, with seven dud games leading to a “C” consistency rating according to the UDK. That said, from Weeks 9-15, Jameson posted six top-15 weeks, including four top-6 weeks (the other was a bye week). Williams was absolutely on fire to end the year, other than the team’s total dud against Minnesota on Christmas.
Williams had four terrible weeks in the first five weeks of the season. If you removed these weeks and looked only at his stats from Weeks 6 onward, he was on pace for 217.8 fantasy points, which would have been WR6, behind only Puka Nacua, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Ja’Marr Chase, and George Pickens.

The Path in 2026
To understand what it takes to bridge the gap from a boom-or-bust WR2 to a locked-in WR1, we have to look at the historical baseline. Let’s evaluate the standard WR12 benchmark over recent seasons:
Looking at these historical averages, Williams doesn’t actually have a massive mountain to climb. He is already clearing the yardage and is very close to the TD baselines. His missing ingredient is simply pure volume.
To lock down a WR1 season, Jamo needs to raise his floor by jumping from 65 receptions to the neighborhood of 75 to 80 catches. Securing roughly one more reliable reception per game is the exact catalyst that will launch him into stardom. As we see from the chart above, that extra 15-20 receptions probably requires about 30-40 more targets. Obtaining that many more targets is a big ask in the Detroit offense where Amon-Ra is the clear WR1, Sam LaPorta deserves the ball a lot, and Isaac TeSlaa is a star on the rise.
The Drew Petzing Factor
A reason to believe this volume spike is coming is the arrival of new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing. Following a disappointing 2025 offensive season that saw the firing of John Morton, head coach Dan Campbell went out and grabbed Petzing. Petzing spent the last few seasons orchestrating the Arizona Cardinals’ offense. Petzing brings a refreshing offensive philosophy to Detroit. He relies heavily on pre-snap motion, complex receiver stacks, RB routes through the offensive line, and systematic alignment shifts to manufacture open space. This is music to the ears of fantasy managers.
Instead of letting opposing secondaries key in on Williams as a one-dimensional deep threat, Petzing’s scheme is designed to dictate coverage mismatches. This strategic upgrade gives Jamo the chance to find space before the ball is even snapped.
Petzing has a track record of turning secondary WR options into stars in his offense. Look no further than Michael Wilson‘s transformation for Arizona last year. Jameson Williams is a far more talented receiver than Michael Wilson, so believing that Petzing can expand Williams’ WR2 role in the Lions’ offense has clear, very recent evidence to support this theory.
Moreover, with all of Detroit’s weapons, defenses cannot key into stopping one guy. Amon-Ra might be the player who dominates volume, but his ability to get open at will requires added attention and multiple defenders. Safeties who creep down to prevent Amon-Ra’s twitchiness are prone to getting beat over the top by Jamo.
Target Share & Utilization
While Amon-Ra St. Brown remains the undisputed alpha of this passing game, the rest of the target tree is ripe for the taking. Williams has spent his early career operating primarily on high-aDOT vertical routes. This depth of target is fantastic for real-world explosive plays, but notoriously inconsistent for a week-to-week fantasy floor.
Reports emerging from early training camp indicate that Petzing is keeping his word to maximize versatility. Williams has been showcasing a significantly expanded route tree during camp drills. His versatility and speed are being used in ways that aren’t just straight-line “9-routes”.
It is early in camp, but early reports suggest that he is operating out of the slot more frequently. He is running crisp intermediate digs, and being targeted heavily on quick screens designed to maximize his run-after-catch acceleration. If these camp designs translate to the regular season, his weekly target floor will skyrocket.
I will remind you that this complex route tree and full versatility were demonstrated by him at Alabama and under Ben Johnson. Plus, he has had a very quiet off-season and has developed trust with Jared Goff.

TDs
Williams has a natural nose for the end zone, logging seven receiving TDs in each of his last two seasons. His scoring efficiency is remarkably high because he can score from anywhere on the football field.
However, a true WR1 ceiling unlocks when a player starts getting high-value targets inside the red zone. If Petzing leverages Williams’ speed on custom red-zone sweeps and quick slants, double-digit TDs are easily within reach. Plus, keep in mind that Williams has been effectively used in the rushing game as well. Designed runs and sweeps could be another scoring opportunity for both NFL TDs and fantasy points.
WR1 Probability for 2026: Strong (50-65%)
Betting on a third-year or fourth-year WR who has already proven he can comfortably crack 1,000 yards is one of the safest configurations in fantasy football. Williams has the pedigree, the QB chemistry with Jared Goff, and now the ideal offensive architect to make the leap.
Conclusion
The path to a WR1 season for Jameson Williams does not require him to become a completely different player. He has already proven that he is an elite playmaker. His path simply requires a slight evolution in utilization. With Drew Petzing modernizing the playbook with shifts and stacks, Jamo is primed to transition from a situational deep threat into an all-around focal point of the Detroit offense.
