NC State enters its season opener as a 5.5-point road underdog against Virginia, but returning QB CJ Bailey gives the Wolfpack an edge under center.

Week 0 of the 2026 college football season is finally upon us, and it features an early-season ACC clash between NC State and Virginia.
The Cavaliers will host after the original plans to play in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, had to be scrapped. That gives Virginia (-5.5) an unexpected advantage and has them favored.

Early NC State vs Virginia spread pick: NC State +5.5

QB CJ Bailey returns for the NC State Wolfpack after a season where he threw for more than 3,100 yards and notched 25 touchdown passes. He’s already getting preseason hype to contend for ACC Player of the Year.
The junior is also a threat to run at any time, something the Virginia Cavaliers quickly learned last season. He picked up 44 rushing yards on the day, and that rushing ability provides the Wolfpack a real weapon to open the season when the offense might need a spark.
The Cavaliers turn to Missouri transfer Beau Pribula, who was wholly inconsistent last season as he dealt with injury. He looked solid in the non-conference slate, but SEC opponents held him to just four TDs against eight interceptions.
Bailey’s knowledge of the playbook gives NC State a clear advantage at quarterback, and his rapport with the offense gives them the ability to keep this game close—if not win outright, as they’ve done in six of the last seven meetings.
Either way, I’m leaning towards the Wolfpack to cover with Bailey behind center, even on the road.

Making matters difficult for Pribula is the fact that he’s not the only starter learning a new playbook. The bulk of Virginia’s rushing and receiving production from a season ago is absent, and a slow start wouldn’t surprise me one bit.
Additionally, his scrambling ability could be negated by NC State edge rusher Harvey Dyson. The Tulane transfer was a key part of their College Football Playoff run, as he led the Green Wave with eight sacks and a 90.4 pass rush grade according to PFF.
Virginia’s defense is returning a high rate of production from a season ago. While I like Bailey to have a solid outing, this is also a spot where he might need some time to get going. LB Kam Robinson will likely be tasked with spying Bailey after missing last season’s contest, and his 6-foot-6 frame will make throws difficult over the middle.
Last year’s game turned into a shootout, but I don’t expect that here. Virginia’s offense will need some time to gel, and Virginia’s defense is too solid to get ripped apart for 60 minutes.
